History of Chapin, SC

Chapin was founded in 1889 and, in 1890, a railroad was built to connect it to Columbia. In 1927, the Saluda River was dammed to create power for the area—it also created Lake Murray. The creation of the lake was beneficial to many people and the town grew. According to the 2016 U.S. Census, Chapin had a population of 1,575 people, although almost 7,000 have a Chapin mailing address.

Chapin is about 22 miles northwest of Columbia and 21 miles southeast of Newberry, a town of around 10,000. The town lies in the Midlands of the state, in the northern part of Lexington County. Chapin can be reached from Interstate 26, which is two miles away.
