Richland NE Columbia South Carolina will be home to Verizon Wireless call center

December 13, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Verizon Wireless, the Midlands’ 10th-largest private employer and the nation’s largest wireless carrier, said Thursday it will open a $40 million, 150,000-square-foot building to house its largest call center. The company is moving its operations and 1500 workers from its downtown location to just outside the Woodcreek Farms subdivision. Construction will start next week and be completed in about a year.

Verizon has bought about 30 acres along Spears Creek Church Road from the developers of Woodcreek Farms. The developers of Woodcreek envision adding a mixture of upscale commercial, residential and retail outlets nearby to the Verizon call center.

The 24 hour operation receives about 20,000 calls a day. Over the last decade, Verizon has tripled the number of workers at the call center including adding 300 employees over the past year.
